Volunteer Services
Through a contract with Hospice Volunteers of
Mid Coast Maine, volunteers are provided for in-home
companionship and respite. Hospice volunteers
provide free, non-medical support to the patient
and family during the final phases of the patient’s
life, and continue to support the family in the
grieving process with bereavement support groups
that are staffed by trained and caring volunteers.
As team members, volunteers are committed to
improving quality of life for those with life-limiting
illnesses and their families. A volunteer acts
very much like a friend. Hospice volunteers are
trained to assist the family in a time of stress,
to be reliable companions, and good listeners.
The primary concern of the volunteer is to create
an atmosphere of warmth, caring and understanding,
while being of service. The volunteer’s
role is not to make the family dependent upon
him/her, but rather to support the family through
a difficult time.
Following the death of the patient, the volunteer
may continue to be of service to the family, at
the request of the family.
